The beauty of Sausalito has inspired songs, books, movies and TV Shows for many years. The setting of a story is often overlooked, but it really plays a pivotal role in shaping any story. Apple TV+’s The Last Thing He Told Me, based on the #1 New York Times bestselling novel by Laura Dave, is the most recent addition to the roster of movies filmed in town. The series takes great advantage of its setting – one of the least violent counties in California – to create a sense of paranoia and suspense beneath the surface. Sausalito is also the perfect candidate to play this role because of its Mediterranean atmosphere, breathtaking views of some of the Bay Area’s most iconic landmarks, stunning topography and exciting waterfront.
The highly anticipated thriller featuring Jennifer Garner features locations around town including: Waldo Point Harbor, Liberty Dock, Yellow Ferry Dock and various locations like Bridgeway at both Easterby and Princess Street and the Marin Headlands. Although it didn’t make it into the series visually, Poggio Trattoria is mentioned in the script and is one of the character’s (Bailey) favorite restaurants! The show is based around Hannah (played by Garner), a woman who must create a relationship with her teenage stepdaughter (Bailey) in order to uncover the truth about her husband’s disappearance.

Prior to Hannah, other characters have also called Sausaltio’s houseboat home. Paul Avery’s, Robert Downy Jr’s character in the film Zodiac featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, house boat is located at 62 Varda Landing Rd. Another character that called an iconic Sausalito houseboat home was Dax Sheppard’s character in the popular TV Show Parenthood. Other filming highlights in that series include: Liberty Dock, City Hall and local favorite Caledonia St.
Sausalito has inspired more than just movies and television shows. Prior to Dave, authors like Jack London and Jack Karouac have also included Sausaltio in their books. The very popular song (Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding was inspired by his time spent living on a houseboat and Sausalito Summer Nights by Diesel is another top charting song that mentions Sausalito. This should come to no surprise as the city is also home to the iconic Record Factory (formally Record Plant) that was home to some of the most iconic recordings including: Fleetwood Mac – Rumors, Stevie Wonder – Songs in the Key of Life, Santana – Supernatural and more!
